A Court of Mist and Fury: Illyrian Wingspan

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas17927395.jpg

It’s rare for me to enjoy a sequel as much as the first novel in a series, and even more rare when you find a sequel that’s even better than the first. A Court of Mist and Fury (ACOMAF) set a new standard for what I’d deem a 5 star read and I had the worst book hangover ever after finishing it.

Feyre is a strong woman in the first book; she’s loyal, and a fighter who’s also fiercely empathetic, a rare combination. In this book though, she truly grows into herself. She becomes more comfortable in her own skin, sees her true worth and discovers that she alone is the master of her own fate. Feyre doesn’t answer to anyone and has found the kind of self-awareness and confidence in herself to which we all should aspire. Once she learns to love herself, she is able to find a healthy relationship with someone who is her true partner, an equal in every way – and it doesn’t hurt that’s he’s the epitome of sexy.

In honor of the character who just might be the YA world’s favorite fictional boyfriend, I’ve dubbed this cocktail, Illyrian Wingspan. It uses Viniq, a liquor that’s so beautiful and shiny and a rich purple – it literally looks someone bottled up the night sky. And this drink is mixed with lemonade to evoke this Illyrian’s delicious citrus scent.

Rating: 5 out of 5 highball glasses

Goodreads synopsis: Feyre survived Amarantha’s clutches to return to the Spring Court—but at a steep cost. Though she now has the powers of the High Fae, her heart remains human, and it can’t forget the terrible deeds she performed to save Tamlin’s people.

Nor has Feyre forgotten her bargain with Rhysand, High Lord of the feared Night Court. As Feyre navigates its dark web of politics, passion, and dazzling power, a greater evil looms—and she might be key to stopping it. But only if she can harness her harrowing gifts, heal her fractured soul, and decide how she wishes to shape her future—and the future of a world cleaved in two.

With more than a million copies sold of her beloved Throne of Glass series, Sarah J. Maas’s masterful storytelling brings this second book in her seductive and action-packed series to new heights.
